Demand for Family Planning Services Soars in Jigawa

Reports from health facilities across Jigawa State’s three senatorial districts reveal a significant surge in demand for family planning commodities among childbearing women. 

Unlike previous years, when commodities often expired in storage due to low patronage, health facilities now frequently run out of stock.

Despite increased supply from donor partners like TCI and augmented state budget allocation for procurement, shortages in public health facilities have driven many to seek private facilities.

Community Health Officer Mrs. Uwani Hussaini attributes the increased demand to heightened public awareness of family planning’s importance for women’s health and child survival.

At Kafin Hausa General Hospital, Mrs. Hussaini noted a 70% increase in women accessing family planning services, with many now advocating for it in their communities. 

Similar trends are seen at Kiyawa Primary Healthcare Facility, Ringim General Hospital, and Andaza Primary Healthcare, with records showing an overwhelming demand that often leads to stockouts.

While the demand for family planning services has significantly increased, the ratio of women accessing these services remains below 20% compared to the number of childbearing women in the state.
