The Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and Trade union Congress (TUC) have intensified their protest against the recent electricity tariff hike in Jigawa, States joining the nationwide demonstration.
On Monday 13th May, 2024, the NLC in Jigawa state picketed the office of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and sealed the Kano Electric Distribution Company (KEDCO) district office in Dutse, the state capital.
Led by Comrade Hazakilu Husaini, Vice Chairman of the NLC, and Comrade Bashir Tijjani Abubakar, Chairman of the TUC state branch, the union executives and members blocked the main gate of the KEDCO office, leaving staff stranded outside the building.
This move follows the failure of NERC and DisCos to comply with the demand for a total reversal of the electricity tariff hike.
The protest is part of a nationwide effort by the NLC and TUC to pressure the government and electricity authorities to reconsider the tariff increase, which has been deemed burdensome for Nigerian workers and citizens.
The unions have vowed to continue their action until their demands are met, potentially affecting electricity distribution across the country.
This development highlights the ongoing struggle between labor unions and the government over issues like electricity pricing, workers’ rights, and the overall economic well-being of Nigerians.
