On May 20th, 2024, a one-day training session was held in Dutse, Jigawa State, sponsored by the Marc Author Foundation.
The training aimed to equip Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the Media with project tracking skills, focusing on two critical thematic areas: Education and Health.
Facilitator Hashim Haruna Hashim explained that the project seeks to train Community of Practice (CoPs) on project tracking, identifying the thematic areas that would be focused on in selected local government areas of the state.
This training is a step-down from a previous training, ensuring that the knowledge and skills are disseminated to a wider audience.
State Support Officer (SSO) Comrade Adam Sulaiman emphasized that the objective is to promote citizen action in tracking and monitoring selected projects across communities using the iFollowTheMoney Model.
This innovative approach will build a network of community stakeholders and CoPs who can introduce transparency and accountability tools like NomTrac and FTM tracking within rural communities.
The expected outcome is that participants will strengthen community and grassroots accountability mechanisms and systems, tracking and monitoring government projects, and advocating for transparency using existing tools like NomTrac.
“By doing so, they will ensure that resources are utilized effectively, and communities receive the necessary support for their development”.
Sulaiman further emphasized that the training will help build a network of community stakeholders and CoPs who can introduce transparency and accountability tools within rural communities, promoting citizen engagement and participation in governance.
The participants agreed to work within six selected local government areas, including Dutse, Gwaram, Hadeja, Kiri-kasamma, Garki, and Kazaure, tracking and monitoring government projects, particularly under State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) and Basic Healthcare Provision Funds (BHCPF), and advocating for transparency using existing tools like NomTrac.
This training marks a significant step towards empowering community-based organizations, civil society organizations, and the media in Jigawa State to take an active role in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.”
