In collaboration with Propcom+ and the National Veterinary Council, the Jigawa state government has recruited, trained, and equipped 300 mobile Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs).
The program aims to promote animal health and production in the state.
Governor Malam Umar Namadi spoke at the graduation and distribution of motorcycles and animal healthcare kits to the trainees, stating that the program addresses the gap in access to animal healthcare services, which has hindered the development of the livestock sector in the state.
He expressed optimism that the program will enhance livestock production, food security, job creation, poverty eradication, and prevent animal disease outbreaks.
Dr. Saifullahi Umar, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, explained that the trained CAHWs will provide veterinary services across the 287 political wards in the state.
Dr. Adya Ode, Country Representative of Propcom+, commended the Jigawa state government’s effort in promoting animal healthcare services, describing it as “very encouraging.”
She emphasized the importance of animal health in ensuring food security, economic stability, and public health.
Dr. Helen, representative of the National Veterinary Council, praised Jigawa state’s effort as “first of its kind in Nigeria” and urged other states to emulate it.
She assured the state government of the Council’s continued support in bridging the gap in veterinary services through manpower training and technical advice.
The program is expected to enhance livestock production, food security, and animal health in Jigawa state, setting a precedent for other states in Nigeria.”
