The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), federal university Dutse branch, has raised the alarm over the deteriorating state of public universities in Nigeria, warning that the sector is on the brink of collapse.
Speaking at a press conference in Dutse, the Chairperson of ASUU-FUD, Comrade Saleem Ahmad, lamented the federal government’s refusal to address the lingering issues bedeviling the sector.
Ahmad listed a dozen outstanding issues, including funding for university revitalization, respect for university autonomy, and payment of earned academic allowances.
The union accused the government of ignoring its leadership and failing to honor agreements reached in the past.
ASUU warned that the continued neglect of public universities would have far-reaching consequences for the country’s education system and the nation’s future.
The union vowed to sensitize the public on the issues and mobilize support for its demands.
The development has sparked concerns among students, parents, and education stakeholders, who are calling on the government to urgently address the issues and save Nigeria’s public universities from collapse.
