NEM-SEMA takes early warning of flood to grassroots level in Jigawa

In a bid to enhance flood preparedness and reduce the risk of flood disasters, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a grassroots-level early warning strategy in Jigawa State.

The agency, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Management Agency (SEMA) , has identified flood-prone communities and is working with local leaders and residents to establish a robust early warning system.

These zone including Ringim, Jahun, Miga, Kaugama, Malammadori, Auyo, Hadejia, Guru, Gwaram, Gwaram, Dutse, Kafin Hausa, Kirikasamma, Garki, Maigatari, Kiyawa, Birniwa, and Taura local governments area of the states. 

The deputy governor Engineer Aminu Usman commended the efforts of NEMA in its response to emergencies in the country especially Jigawa state.

He said the state is also doing it’s best to see that everyone is secured from the flood. 

In his speech, the executive secretary emargency management agency in the state Dr Haruna Mairiga advised the participants to listen attaintively during the lectures. 

According to NEMA’s Director-General, Ahmed Habib, the agency is committed to ensuring that early warnings reach the grassroots level, empowering communities to take proactive measures against flood disasters.

The early warning strategies include a community-based early warning system, SMS alerts, sirens, and public address systems, collaboration with traditional leaders, and flood monitoring teams.

The initiative aims to enable early evacuation, property protection, and livelihood preservation.
