The concept of criticism in Nigerian politics is often misconstrued. It is disheartening to see that legislative members are unable to express the concerns of their constituents without facing repercussions. The Nigerian constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but this right is being eroded.
Recent examples illustrate this trend. Senator Abdul Ningi, who questioned the allocation of funds in the 2024 budget, was suspended for carrying out his constitutional duty.
Similarly, Senator Ali Ndume, a member of the ruling party, faced consequences for speaking the truth. Abubakar Dadiyata, who went missing five years ago, remains unaccounted for, highlighting the dangers of expressing opinions and criticizing the government. Dan Bilki Commander’s experience serves as another cautionary tale.
These instances demonstrate how criticism is suppressed in Nigeria. Instead of encouraging accountability and transparency, the government responds with threats and intimidation. This undermines democracy and discourages citizens from holding the government accountable.
As a nation, we must recognize the value of constructive criticism in a democratic system. It is essential to salvage what remains of our country’s honor. We must learn to tolerate dissenting voices and encourage open debate, rather than silencing critics.
May Almighty Allah rescue our beloved country from this downward spiral.
