The Jigawa State Government has convened a stakeholders meeting in preparation for the official visit of Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday. The meeting, held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Dutse, was declared open by Governor Malam Umar Namadi.
Governor Namadi emphasized the importance of peace and stability in achieving meaningful development. He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth leaders to discourage their followers from participating in the planned national protest on August 1. The governor warned that such protests have destroyed many countries, especially in the developing world, and that peaceful approaches are the best way to resolve issues.
Various stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, Christian Association of Nigeria, and National Association of Nigerian Students, disassociated themselves from the planned protest. They expressed support for the government’s efforts to address the economic challenges facing the country.
Governor Namadi acknowledged the economic hardship in the country but emphasized that the government is doing its best to cushion the effects. He highlighted the distribution of food items and cash at all levels of government and the federal government’s approval of duty-free importation of food items for five months.
The Police Commissioner and Commander of the 26 Armoured Bridge Garrison warned against any attempts to breach public peace and order during the planned protest. They assured that security agencies are combat-ready to deal with any situation.
Traditional rulers and religious leaders expressed concern over the economic hardship but emphasized that protest is not the solution. They urged citizens to repent and seek God’s forgiveness and intervention.
