CODE visits MDAs to Strengthen accountability and inclusive system in Yobe.

Yobe State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education reassured commitment to collaborate with Connected Development CODE on social accountability, transparency and inclusiveness to ensure good governance.

The commissioner of the ministry, Associate Professor Abba Idriss Adam, gave the assurance when the Cops team, led by Mohammad Kime, paid him an advocacy visit at his office in Damaturu.

Represented by the Director of school management, Bukar M Modu, the Commissioner said the ministry has schools for people with special needs in major towns of the state, pointing out that they only lack instructors in the schools.

According to the Commissioner, the ministry used to hire instructors ( teachers) in various state who specialises in teaching people with special needs.

Associate Prof Abba noted that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, has provided all the necessary support to the ministry to improve the inclusive system in all basic and secondary schools across the state.

The ministry has shown commitment to adhere to the provision of disability act and assured the execution of inclusive projects to improve enrolment.

He assured the readiness of the ministry to collaborate with the College of Education Gashua to introduce special education courses to offer Higher National Diploma and National Diploma to fill in the existing gaps.

Similarly, the CODE team was at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for the same purpose and was received by the Commissioner of the Ministry, Architect Ahmed Buba, who reaffirmed the theministry’sy’s willingness to partner with the connected development to ensure transparency and an inclusive system.

The Commissioner emphasised the notation system while executing projects awarded by the government through collaboration with Community members for citizen inclusion.

Represented by Chief Builder Mika’il Njayo, the Commissioner said the ministry would continue to sensitise their clients, both public and private,e, on the importance of inclusion while practising the profession.

According to him, the building is part of life, which needs professionalism to minimally reduce the increasing cases of building collapse in the country.

Arc Ahmed Buba said the ministry door would always remain open for useful advice that can move the state forward.

Earlier, the team lead, Mohammad Kime, stated that the advocacy visit is part of Project Trust’s efforts to create awareness among relevant MDAs on social accountability, good governance and inclusion systems in the state.

Kime further added that with such advocacy Nigerians can enjoy the dividend of democracy and improve the political system of the country.

According to him, the aims and objectives of the project are to equip stakeholders with the needed skills to track the project, encourage transparency and foster accountability in governance through partnerships with MDAs.

On his part, the Joint National Chairman PWD Yobe State Chapter, Alhaji Usman Brah Gabai, appealed to both public and private builders to emphasise the needs of disabled people while constructing projects.

According to the chairman, factors affecting the enrolment of the disabled in schools are the nature of the building and the lack of latrines and water facilities.

He called on the ministries to provide a friendly atmosphere to the people with special needs in schools, water facilities, healthcare centres, and public buildings, among others.

The advocacy visit by the Cops team includes Media, CSO, CBO, and PWD, among others.
