National Population Commission NPC in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has flagged off the 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social autopsy in Yobe state.
Briefing journalists at the NPC state office conference Hall today 5th December 2024 the federal Commissioner Population Commission in charge of Borno and Yobe Barrister Isa Audu Buratai said the introduction of the 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study which is a crucial survey designed to provide insight into the causes of under-five and maternal deaths in our communities.
The commissioner said NPC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, is implementing the VASA programme nationwide study builds on previous efforts from 2014 and 2019, which provide valuable information that helped shape health policies and interventions aimed at reducing preventable deaths.
According to him, the study is a follow-up to the 2023 – 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health survey that was concluded in May this year.
He further stated that the launching of an important health initiative will have a lasting impact on the well-being of mothers and children across the two states of Borno, Yobe and the entire nation.
Barrister Isa Buratai assured that providing with needed information will help the government understand and plan to address the biomedical and social causes of death of children under the age of five and for women of reproductive age.
The commissioner commended the strong collaboration between the NPC, the Ministry of Health and other partners for the successful implementation of health-related projects in the past and expressed confidence in the success of the survey study.

Barrister Buratai reassured that the study will collect essential data on both maternal and child mortality, focusing on social and health-related factors that contribute to these tragic losses.
According to the commissioner, the fieldwork for the study will be conducted in some selected communities throughout the state between 4th November and 15th December 2024, pointing out that during the exercise, data collectors will visit households to conduct interviews with family members and gather information to understand the circumstances surrounding maternal and child deaths.
He appealed to the traditional, community leaders, media and general public to play a vital role in mobilising the community to support and facilitate the smooth conduct of the activities.
Barrister Audu Buratai used the medium and Commended Yobe state government and state ministries for their unwavering support and commitment to the succes of the study.
In their separate remarks, the survey team coordinator and state Director NPC Yobe state Sale Garba and Iyawa Da madagwa appealed for more support and corporation from the people of the selected community to ensure success of the exercise.
