PLANE holds quarterly review meeting in Jigawa

Partnership for learning for all in Nigeria (PLANE) held its Jigawa state-based quarterly program review meeting on Tuesday in Dutse,the state capital.

The program discussed PLANE activities and share year 3 quarter 1 accomplishments and challenges with the stakeholders.

Furthermore, as part of the objectives, the stakeholders discussed the state plans for system strengthening and sustainability of PLANE intervention. And finally discussed with stakeholders and developed a state level presentation for the central quarterly review meeting.

In his remarks, the state team lead, Mustapha B. Ahmad said PLANE has been in Jigawa for the last two years and made archivement on teacher training, policy development and assessment, institutional development.

Ahmad said in two years PLANE moved the state from zero ground to at least 6-7 percent increase, and in the second year they moved to 30 percent increase in the learning outcome.

He said in October 2023 and July 2024, PLANE and government partners collected learning outcomes data in primary 2 and 3 using the early grade reading assessment (EGRA) and early grade math assessment, (EGMA), with 4 LGAs and 34 schools samples.

According to him, learners imoroved during the 2023-2024 school year, with primary 3 learners advancing more than primary 2. Children performance better overall in mathematics. “However, despite the improvements, children fell short of the 50 percent improvement target set for the year”.

Mr. Mustapha stated that when PLANE began implementation, roughly 93 percent of P2 learners in Jigawa were at the beginner level for Hausa, ” meaning the could read no more than 4 letters of alphabet. After two years in the programme, children demonstrated progress, resulting in a 30 percent reduction in the number of learners at the beginner level”.

Dr. Binta Hussain Umar, a lecturer with the Jigawa state college of education Gumel, said part of the PLANE planning activities it to improve the learning outcome at foundational level.

She said PLANE is doing it best in training teachers in 7 selected LGAs and training and retraining of teachers. Provision of learning and teaching materials among others.

PLANE is a seven year programme that strengthens education systems to deliver foundational skills. In 2023-2024, PLANE worked with Jigawa state to implement literacy and mathematics programming in seven local government areas that includes; Dutse, Gagarawa, Jahun, Kafin Hausa, Malam Madori, Taura, and Yankwashi, reaching 145, 289 children in Primary 1-3 in 750 schools.
Programming focused on teacher training, coaching, mentoring and book distribution.
