Gumel emirate Honours Late General Ibrahim Gumel’s legacy

The ancient city of Gumel recently played host to a maiden memorial lecture to honor the late General Dahiru Ibrahim Gumel, a renowned national figure and former Chief of Defense Intelligence and Minister of Transport under the military regime of general Sani Abacha.

The event, organized by the Gumel Emirate Foundation, aimed to immortalize General Gumel’s selfless community service and legacy. Speaking at the occasion, Alhaji Bashari Muhammad Gumel, chairman of the occasion, praised General Gumel’s sacrifices to national service and his role in promoting community service in the Emirate and beyond.

“Late General ID Gumel was an icon promoting community service in the Emirate and beyond,” Alhaji Bashari said. “He was a symbol of military honor who served the nation with high pedigree.”

General Gumel’s wife, Hajiya Laraba Ibrahim Gumel, received a ward of honor and appreciation on behalf of the family.

The Gumel Emirate Foundation, established by General Gumel in 1992 with N500 million, has made significant impacts on the Emirate’s development, including educational support to many youths who have excelled in various fields.

In his remarks, the Federal Minister of Defense, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, described General Gumel as a symbol of military honor who served the nation with high pedigree. “His contribution to Nigerian Military development, national infrastructures, Jigawa state and Gumel Emirate is worth emulation and it will remain indelible in the annals of history,” he said.

His Highness Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Sani, Emir of Gumel, commended the organizers and urged the people to reflect on General Gumel’s virtues and build their reputation and sustainable legacy.

Daily trust report that the late General Gumel’s notable legacies include laying the foundation for revamping Nigerian railways and initiating purposeful dredging of River Nigeria to decongest coastal ports. He served as Chief of Defense Intelligence between 1991-1995 and Minister of Transport between 1995-1998.

Other prominent individuals honored for their contributions to the Emirate’s development included Alhaji Basharii Muhammad Gumel, Alhaji Abdullahi Maikano Umar Daniyan, Engr Habu Ahmad Gumel, Adamu Muhammad Nasoro (Wazirin Gumel), Alhaji Saidu Bako, Alhaji Saidu Abbas Dandarman Gumel, Alhaji Faruku Bashir Muhammad Gumel, Dr. Bashir Umar Danzomo, Professor Nuruddeen Ahmad, Alhaji Wada Salisu Maigatari, and Hajiya Laraba Abdullahi Gumel, among others.
