Kano Commissioner Applauds Gafan Market Closure, Stresses Need for Youth Skill Programs

Kano State Commissioner for the Tourism Management Board, Aisha Lawan Saji Rano, has expressed support for the decision to close the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in Garun Malam Local Government Area over allegations of immoral activities.

In a statement, Commissioner Saji described the closure as a necessary step to restore societal values and ensure public order.

The commissioner commended the local government and other stakeholders for their efforts to address the issues of prostitution, adultery, and other vices that have been reported as prevalent in the market.

She emphasized that the closure was not an end but rather the beginning of a broader effort to promote community development.

Saji also called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to consider establishing a skill-acquisition institution in the area. She believes the initiative will not only combat unemployment but also empower the youth and contribute to the state’s economic growth.

“This closure should not just mark the end of immoral activities but also serve as a stepping stone for development. Establishing a skills development institution in this area will not only curb unemployment but also equip our youths with sustainable means of livelihood,” Saji said.

The closure, which follows allegations of immoral activities, was confirmed by the Chairman of Garun Malam Local Government Area, Aminu Salisu Kadawa. The decision includes a seven-day ultimatum for traders to vacate the premises, with the intention of re-evaluating the market’s operations and restoring order.

Aisha Lawan Saji’s support for the closure is not new, as she has previously addressed similar concerns. During her tenure as Commissioner for Women Affairs, Saji led a raid in the same market alongside security personnel and Hisbah officials.

The raid resulted in the arrest of 59 women involved in prostitution and the illegal sale of alcohol. Several of the arrested women were found to be HIV-positive or pregnant and hailed from various states, including Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba.

Reflecting on the past intervention, Saji shared that she had submitted a report to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, recommending the demolition of the market due to the harmful activities occurring there.

While the closure has been met with support from some residents, others have expressed concerns about the economic impact on traders. In response, Saji’s call for a skills development program presents a solution that addresses economic concerns while aiming to prevent future occurrences of immoral activities.

“Skills acquisition is the foundation for building a strong and prosperous society. With the right skills, our youths can contribute positively to the development of our community and the state at large,” Saji remarked.
