The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Jigawa State Management Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry for Local Government, organized a training program on building resilient communities in Jigawa State.
The program aimed to enhance local disaster preparedness and response, with a focus on flood risk management.
The two-day training, held at the Manpower Development Institute in Dutse on Tuesday, June 16, and Thursday, June 18, 2024, brought together traditional rulers, education secretaries, community residents, Red Cross organization, and fire services.

Dr. Haruna Mairiga, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Management Agency, advised residents living in flood zones to relocate to flood-free areas. He assured them of federal and state government support for affected communities.
The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by Dr. Nura Abdullahi, Kano Coordinator of NEMA, emphasized the program’s goal of building community capacity for quick response during floods before reporting to SEMA.
The Red Cross international organization demonstrated emergency response techniques to assist during occurrences.
The training comes as a response to the devastating floods in 2022 that affected many villages and towns in Jigawa State, resulting in over 100 deaths and billions of naira in property losses.
